 Message from Karen Profita

Your CAUW staff is moving forward with enthusiasm in part motivated by the momentum being generated by the outstanding campaign efforts around the city.  It is inspiring to see Baton Rouge yet again show its resiliency and compassion.  Whether at company cookoff’s, golf tournaments, agency events, football games, Shaken or Stirred or any place else we see you - our staff has been boosted by the enthusiasm for making the community stronger through United Way and the agencies we serve.  Your support is driving us to dream big as we lay out our plans for 2009.

We hope this Thanksgiving you are filled with warmth of gratitude from all who give thanks that you have chosen to make a difference.

Capital Area United Way Distributes Additional Disaster Relief Funds

Throughout the last two months, Capital Area United Way (CAUW) announced over $579,000 in disaster relief awards to local non-profit agencies to help support the agencies’ work to address immediate community needs post-Hurricane Gustav.
“Hurricane Gustav devastated our area, yet has not garnered the same national media attention or the same level of worldwide fund contributions as we found after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita,” says Karen Profita, President and CEO of Capital Area United Way. “We are grateful to our contributors who have stepped-up to provide relief funds and are proud to support our local non-profit community who continue to provide much needed services, even now in these weeks after the storm.”
The CAUW Board of Directors awarded new funds as follows:
·         $20,000 to Salvation Army of Greater Baton Rouge
·         $35,000 to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge
·         $12,000 to United Methodist HOPE Ministries
·         $14,813.16 to Capital Area Agency on Aging
CAUW established a Disaster Relief Fund to support its 49 Member Agencies as well as other local non-profit organizations after the storm. Applications are still being reviewed and CAUW anticipates announcing further fund awards throughout the coming weeks.
ExxonMobil was the first corporate partner to contribute to the fund, generously donating $500,000 to help with local needs. Additional contributions have been made from CF Industries, Praxair, Air Liquide, and individual donors. One hundred percent of Disaster Relief Funds will be given to community agencies with no administrative fees being deducted.
